Directed by Kevin Kunz, a founding member and arranger of a cappella sensation, Groove For Thought. Kevin is a Seattle area native, long-time professional vocalist, musician, and worship leader. His award-winning arrangements and compositions, along with his extensive recording, producing, and choral experience enable him to make this new adventure a great and ambitious opportunity to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. Two-time CARA award winner, U.S.A. Songwriting Competition finalist, 2005 National Harmony Sweepstakes Champion with Groove For Thought, and a Northwest Regional A cappella competition judge give Kevin the experience and “ear” to “tune-up” StraigherRoad into a dynamic professional group!
Straighter Road started their journey in the summer of 2012. Kevin Kunz, wife Mary and daughter Aliya reached out to Diane Trandum, (High School mate of Kevin's) and they started their search to form a gospel choir. Lynn Knight, also a high School mate, joined the group and they spent about 6 months recruiting singers. Many came and went and Chris Nelson joined the group. Still without a tenor, Lynn reached out to friend, Jerry Leith and they were off. Their attempt to start a large gospel choir ended with 7 united singers........and that's just how God works isn't it? We have a plan and He has another plan and He wins every time! Spending about a year crafting arrangements and lush harmonies, Straighter Road decided to try their hand at a capella, and this leg of the journey culminated in them being crowned 2015 NATIONAL Harmony Sweepstakes Champions. This band of 7 brothers and sisters in Christ, with vastly varying backgrounds in music, united in praising God, in rich, lush gospel/jazz based harmony are committed to praising our Lord, with dedication, passion and creativity!
Where did the name "Straighter Road" come from? Back in 2003, our songwriter/arranger/director became a Christian. He wrote a song which is on Groove For Thought's original album, for which he was awarded best original song at Harmony Sweepstakes. The song was called Walk the Straighter Road, and subsequently, the name of his publishing company became Straigher Road. When he decided to form this group, we all voted, and this name seemed fitting for what we stand for. Here are the lyrics to the original song.
Walk the Straighter Road When hope is gone and you stand before the open door, hear the voice that calls to you to walk the Straighter Road. When all is lost, just hold the hand that lifts your load; Trust the one that's guiding you and walk the Straighter Road. Voices say to look within for the measure of a man, but lies live inside us holding truth in their hand. The only Voice unwavering guides you through the door to an everlasting love and hope. A secret bathed in heavens light reveals a troubled soul and offers hope to every life to walk the straighter road. When dreams seem far, and the rivers of your life run dry, taste where living waters flow along the straighter road. Voices say to look within for the measure of a man. But lies live inside us holding truth in their hand. The only Light unwavering shines through the door to an everlasting love and hope. A secret bathed in heavens light reveals a troubled soul and offers hope in darkest night to walk the Straighter Road. By Kevin Kunz
